hi, i'm new to fish keeping and i am prepared to have a go at breeding my splendens as i have bred my guppys successfully many times now.

i was first wondering, i have looked around on sites and it says float something in the top of your tank for the male to make a bubble nest, is this true, also is it a plant or something else, people from different sites have said use a polystyrene cup, i don't like the sound of this idea :D.

any help you could give would be great

thanks

The male will build a nest under anything that floats. A large plant leaf will do just fine if you don't like the idea of styrofoam. It's just that half a cup does a really good job of containing the nest and gives you a great view of it.

I got a piece of flat polystyrene and cut it 3" x 5" and put it in the right corner of my tank, the male built is bubble nest under it straight away..

Here is a vid if ou want to see more clearly how i did it..

will you have to have a tank just for the splendens or can you put them into a community tank, and then put the other fish into nets etc, if you need a tank just for breeding, then i'll get one. just a question coz i'm not sure lol.

thanks for help so far anyways! :good:
