What are the best water test kits? I used the Tetra tablets.

The reason I ask is, before I did this my NitrAte reading was 75mg/l, I did a 20% water change today with my Syphon Pyhon Vac (Cleared plenty of poop from the gravel)

5 hours later I checked it again & it was exactly the same (75mg/l)

I feed my fish twice a day & run an Ehiem 2128 External Thermo filter. (See my sig for other info)

The tank has been running for over 5 months.

Any advice appreciated..

Tetra liquid test kits, and nutrafin i used them both.

Have you looked in the filter at your sponges to see if they are really gunked up, one might wan't a slight rinse in some old tank water, plus to get nitrates down, daily water changes, Plus what is your nitrate tap reading.

I use API test kits, their master test kit is a good place to start, about £17.50 for Nitrate, Nitrite, Amonia, pH, high range pH. Widely used and recommended.

I thinking of using api as they are alot cheaper than tetra, as i find tetra are good, but they charge to much for them.

Cheers Wilder - Did change white top pad in my filter about 2 months ago now I come to think of it, will check & replace or rinse in small amount of tank water. And will check tap readings tomorrow too.

The white filter pad won't cleaning once a week in tank water, don't replace the sponges just an expense you don' need, plus you will lose your beneifical bacteria that cycled the tank, just rinse one for now slightly to remove some of the gunk,as do them all and you could end up in a mini cycle.I no now you mean replace the filter pad that fine.

You don't have to buy them filter pads as they can be expensive, i just buy a bag of filter floss alot cheaper.
