What are the best tankmates for a betta? I have been thinking about adding zebra danios, cories, and harliquin rasboras. Would they be ok together? Also what other fish would be good? The tank is about 30 gallons.
zebra danios can go both ways sometimes ok sometimes terrible not to sure about harelquins, african dwarf frogs tend to be ok as do apple snails, corys also seem to do ok
I added my betta to a 16 gallon with 7 cooper rasboras. They all got along very nice. As far as feeding, since my betta was a mellow dude so I would have to drop his pellets right in front of his mouth otherwise the rasboras would beat him to it.
Be careful with the Zebra danios. I rescued one of my Bettas from an lfs who's fins were shredded due to being kept in a tank with them.
My first tank I kept White Cloud Mountain Minnows and they were fine together.
I wouldnt put Tetras in. They will also pick the bettas fins off.
Corys do great! So do plecos. But plecos grow fast and will at some
point need to me moved to a bigger tank. My black hi pleco started
out in my 10 gallon with my betta. He was very small, But after 3
months doubled in size and is now in my 75 gallon african cichlid
tank. Corys only get to be 3 inches at the most and are a more
wise choice. They are bottom feeders and will clean the tank.
So now my betta has 2 corys as his tank mates.
well, i don't know what your tank size is, but assuming you have enough room for a proper sized school of each type of fish (6+) i'd say cories are a great addition to a betta tank that are likely to be largely ignored by the betta, and there seems to have been a lot of success with various rasbora species so harlequins will probably do fine but be sure to watch them JUST IN CASE. I would skip the danios or any of the tetras with a long-finned betta because most (though not all) stories involving bettas and danios or tetras seem to end up as tragedies.
As in any community, just make sure that everybody is getting enough to eat and no one is being harrassed and things should go fine.
[edit] okay, ignore my stupidity, you DID mention the tank size
