I will soon be setting up my next tank which will be in an Asian theme and I would really like to have sand in it rather than gravel. I have no experience with sand so I put the question out to you. What type/brand of sand would you recommend?

there is a pinned topic about this somewhere I think i'll have a look and see what I can find for yah

hmm sorry i looked in every forum. I seem to remember there being more pinned topics. Do they get deleted after a time?

The pinned topics are going to be put in a special section, at they moment they are gone :)

I like play sand personally, looks really good.
Play sand? Like kids play sand?
Yep, that's what I used. Kid's Play sand. You just have to make sure you wash it really well! I learned that the hard way...

Exactly

Go to a Home Depot or something (depending on which country you're in  ) and get some kids play sand and just wash it really good.

Home Depot? Brilliant.... I live in the US and I'm a contractor so I'm in there every other day! Thanks.

Well that'll work

I think Walmart sells it cheaper. :p It is like $1.67 for a 40 pound bag and it took me like 4 bags to fill up my 120 gallon about an inch high. It looks pretty good but gets dirty really easily, so if you don't like looking at poo all out in the open, don't get white play sand. Unless you are willing to clean the sand daily. I usually clean mine every couple of days.

If you want a darker sand, check into the Tahitian Moon Sand from Carib Sea. I used it in my 75 gallon and it looks great. It is also very easy to clean. One simple rule of thumb on sand/cleaning: the amount of time it takes you to wash/clean the sand is in reverse proportion to how expensive it is. If you pay very little for the sand (play sand which I have in my 29 gallon) plan on spending a lot of your time washing it. It will take a while. If you pay more for it (Tahitian Moon Sand which is in my 75 gallon) you won't have to spend much time at all washing it.

I spent well over an hour cleaning about 30 lb of the play sand for my 29 gallon and the water was still so cloudy that I couldn't see the wall behind the tank 5 days later. At that point I did a 100% water change (no fish yet). I still had cloudyness after I filled it back up but at least it was gone in another couple days. Even now, if I move plants around or disturb the sand while vacuuming, I still get some cloudyness.

I spent about 10 minutes washing 40 lb of the Tahitian Moon sand and had absolutely no cloudyness at all. If you disturb it, it lays straight back down.

Edited for spelling.
