I have a 5.5 gallon tank that I just set up for one of my male bettas. It's my very first planted tank. My light strip came with a regular ol' fluorescent bulb in it (All-glass Aquarium 14W Aquarium Lamp). I'm sure it's not great for the plants, and its color is horrendous for my fish. He's a very bright purple with red fins and all of his color is just gone under this light. You truly can't even see the purple - he just looks a muddy shade of red all over. I moved him from an Eclipse tank that had a "natural daylight" bulb built in, and he had looked great there. So, I need to replace this bulb for sure. What type do you suggest for the good of the plants, as well as showing off the color of the fish?

Thanks!!

lol I forget what i used, Ill have to move the lazyboy to get into the fishtank cabinet, so give me a few, but Im positive someone will have a great and detailed answer here shortly ^_^

I was told by my local aquarium to use a Coralife Mini Compact Flourescent 10 watt bulb for the plants. The colormax (thats what I got) has a purplish hugh to the color but I know for sure they make more than one bulb color.

I actually had two (i have a ten gallon), but I wasn't very happy with the light and switched one of the bulbs out with a regular fluorescent screw in bulb (the kind you would use around the house)(aka the 'green movement' lightbulb.) Personally I believe the plants do better with this bulb and the tank is much more vibrant.

Thanks guys! Having trouble finding ANY choices locally so will have to find 'em online.
