Today I noticed the smallest little red streak coming in from the edge of my silver goldfish's tailfin, and I don't want to let it go in case it is something bad. He is in a moderately planted tank (20USgal) by himself with an airstone.

Tank stats: Nitrate < 5; Nitrite: 0; Ammonia: 0; pH: ~7.0; temp: ~72F

What would be the best thing to use if it's a small bacterial infection? I have some Marycyn 2, would Melafix or something else be better? Thanks.

I would do a Maracyn I and II combo just in case... so there is no possibility of it turning into something more serious. Worst case scenario, you could use Tetracycline. But I think Maracyn should work well if it's not too bad.

I hate having to use meds, but I would hate losing a fish even more :/ .

I dosed the tank with Maracyn 2 a few minutes ago. I think we'll be all right, he's a pretty tough guy. Over a year ago when I got back after a leave of absence we had to go through a round of fin rot with Maracyn 2, which worked pretty well.

Maracyn two , or teracycline a its abit stronger, but follow the instructions you might have to issolae so it dosnt wipe your bacteria colony out.
