Hi

New to the board and the hobby, been carefully cycling my tank and it will be ready for its first set of fish on tuesday, hopefully. Been doing some serious reading on fish species, which ones are good together and which ones are good for beginners like myself. Guppys and tetras appear to be ideal for me. However, there appears to be some debate on what type of fish would be good for a new tank like mine. I would just like to hear a few views on subject before making my final decision.

Thanks

What size is your tank? Even though you've cycled your tank, I'd still be inclined to go for hardy fish til things settle, which they will quickly!

Guppies are fairly hardy, what kind of tetras were you thinking of?

And welcome to the board!

Platys are very hardy and great fun to watch in a tank. They come in loads of differnt colors and have really sweet characters, especially at feeding time, they are like little pigs! Zebra danios are also very hardy and good for new set ups, they zip around the tank like they are at a rave (big fish litlie fish, ect ect!). HTH , GRJ :fish:

Yes, certain types of gourami are good but I'm guessing it's quite a small tank so gourami's might not be suitable. We need to know your tank size Apollo!

its only a small tank. Its my starting off tank.

Been looking at mini neon tetras. But after reading up i am thinking that they are not hardy enough for a new tank as i believe they prefer a mature tank. The aqaurium i have been to recommended little male guppys.

30 litres works out at about 8 gallons so shoaling fish wouldn't be a good choice for that size tank.
Guppies aren't very hardy at all due to so much inbreeding.
Fish like Danios, Tetras, barbs etc. prefer a tank size of about 10G+ as they are active and like plenty of swimming space.

I've got some platies and agree they are sweet little fish, they are livebearers though so you may want all males...

Some small corydoras make a nice addition too.

I had (until recently when 2 died) 6 adult platies in a 10gal + fry, I am now using that tank as my quarentine tank and/or nursery as I have 2 pregnant platies again... LOL

Small, non-shoaling hardy fish will be good for you. Or a Betta and some shrimp? (Not sure if they are ok for a new tank though, sure someone will)
