I have heard about gas pockets....what is the best depth of sand to put in??
I am thinking about putting a layer of gravel underneath the sand will this help the sand to sit better or does it not really matter?

It's 2" that is probably the maximum if you don't want anerobic pockets that can kill your fish, but you can put as much as you like aslong as you stir it every week to stop anerobic pockets. MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails) are good at stiring the sand up for you and they keep it very clean. Read Neale's (Nmonks) topic on "Sand as a Subsrate" it's a pinned article in Beginner Questions, it will pretty much answer all your questions, I know it answered mine.
HTH,
Neal

You're a star, thanks :D
Yeah I read that thread it was great help. :)

If you're not wanting any plants, .5-1cm would be fine. Anything above that uses tank space and is unneeded unless you keep burrowing fish, ie, banjos.

and make sure any large decor is placed on the glass at the bottom of the tank as the presure exerted by the weight of the decor will create anaerobic pockets

Oh, so the decor is actually under the sand and not on top? :)

mine is sat on the glass, i then added the sand around it and "fanned" the excess sand off the cave and bog wood with my hand, i did this after i first added the bogwood to the tank and a week later the sand underneath it went grey.

What about small tank decor? Also on the glass?
