Hi everyone,

Im struggling to work out which filter to buy. Any help would be appreciated.

Im looking at getting 2 bio pro 2200ltr uv from ebay.

Not sure on the quality, guess im after best bang for buck. I could also be swayed with great performance/quietness and not having to clean it out every 2 weeks. (Ive seen on forums eheims that have no cleaning for 6 months)

I would like to stock a few discus with, clown loaches, conga tetras and a ghost knife.
Will also have plants, guess im after some advice to help avoid problems later.
thank you

Same sized tank as mine. I use a Fluval FX5 (now FX6) and clean it out every month or six weeks but importantly I don't have any fine polishing pads in it as they block up in a week and the whole thing has to be sorted. For taking out small particles I use a Fluval U4 internal filter and change the filter floss weekly (it takes a few seconds) with floss I buy in bulk on ebay.

Every two months or so I take the pipes out and run a small bottle brush fastened to a garden cane through them.

The U4 is utterly silent, the FX5 has a hum but nothing significant and not noreworthy.

My FX5 has ceramic beads in the top basket, plastic balls with a bit of coarse filter foam in the second basket and fine filter foam in the bottom basket (the FX5 and 6 filter from the top down). Again, I stress, don't put filter floss in as it blocks up too quickly.

I think a lot of the clogging depends on your tank, I have filter floss in mine and it doesn't get overly clogged. I clean it once a month, and I have a fluval 406, which isn't big enough for you, but I like the fluval products a lot!

I had a Fluval 306 in a smaller tank that didn't get clogged either. I think it is probably due to the lower flow and the fact that in a smaller tank you would have fewer fish. It's only with the six-footer that the problem occurs hence the use of the internal filter just for the fine crud, it also helps to distribute the water and is easily camouflaged behind a plant or a a piece of wood and it does mean that the larger filter has to be cleaned more infrequently (less frequently? OK, less often).
