we've had a discus tank for about a year now and recently started to get alot of algae growth , just read an article about old bulbs causing algea growth? what are the best bulbs for a non planted tank to show off fish colour? many thanks..

can be caused by lights been on for to long how long do u have your lights on???

try cutting light time to 6 hours a day i have mine on 6 a day and dnt get any problems.

Hi, I have a new Discus Tank 90 gal (3 1/2 Months) Took me 7 weeks to get it cycled with 4-3" fish. Once I got it cycled--and even before I had a serious problem with green algae. Everywhere.
Cut the light back from 10 hrs to 4 and that took care of the problem. One of the original 4 fish has stopped eating--for weeks. I finally noticed he was eating algae from one of the wood decos in the tank. He has done a remarkable job of cleaning it as I was afraid to do it for fear of wrecking it--it's a brown artificial driftwood type deco. He is gonna run out of algae soon. Never comes out to eat and seldom swims with the others. The other 3 are thriving and growing. Added 2 more 2 weeks ago. 3". One has not eaten since he got here--it's like he is blind to the food which will drop right by him and hit him sometimes. He is not being bullied as 3 of the fish are much larger now. The other also was not eating the first week and a half but now has started eating frozen food and continues to ignore the Discus flakes. I have an Edge light from AquaticLife and it does a great job but the fish don't like bright light so I keep the "White" cycle off. Problem now is I can't get the Nitrate below 40PPM. Temp 85* PH 7.6 as recommended by Discus Hans from whom I got all the fish. www.discus-hans-usa.com
0 ammonia and nitrite. Any comments welcome!!!

can aways do more water changes to get it down u need be on 3 to 4 25% water changes  a week and 1 50% this will bring Nitrate below 40PPM. updaite me if any changes with going higher mate feel free to mail me if need any more help.

Hi, finally found my way back here. I emailed you earlier this week. Anyway, the water changes just didn't work and as I advised in my email I didn't try the 50% one as after 4 consecutive days doing 25% with no improvement,  I didn't think it would do the trick and the big center where I bought my set up said it could shock the fish.
Is there a way on this forum that it will generate an email so one will know when a response to a post is made?  If so, where can I go to see how that is done and also, is there a place where I can find out how to upload pictures to the post? Thanks!
