are his fins starting to grow back? (tiny bit of fin damage in the picture)

To be honest i'd not noticed any damage-

which fin looks damaged? (and how might it have happened as theres nothing to snag it on in his tank?)

Do you see how his fins look all jagad and the tips look clearish white ish? Like theve been torne ? To me, it loks like his ainal and a good part of his tail have been damaged, but are healing. This could have possablt been caused by "tail biting" dreaded by all betta owners, Fin rot from being housed improperly(though obviously not by you, nice set up by the way). Or worse, an incounter with a nother male eather by accident or intentionally. They look like the're growing back well though, just make sure you keep his water clean, and do a water change once a week on that tank. :good:

Very cute little guy though!

Best of luck!

i have only had him a month- and he's always looked like that :(

When i got him he was on the desk of my LFS in a tiny container (smaller than a cup) that looked like one of the plastic balls you put in the washing machine. perhaps it stems from that?

I have some melafix for my tropical tank at home is it worth adding a little bit of that to encourage regrowth?

My class researched all about Bettas before buying him as part of our PHSE topic on responsibilities and they produced a mini booklet entitles how to care for our class betta- It highlights things like minimum tank size. water temp and what to feed etc- They really enjoyed the topic knowing that at the end they could go out and buy the tank, accessories and then eventually the betta.

The only thing we don't have is a small filter, but we do 50% water changes once a week (and add dechlorinator) which the kids measure out (with my help)

We feed him a mixture of betta pellets and live brine shrimp- (my class LOVE feeding him live food- and seeing him chase them around his tank) but he doesn't get fed on a Saturday or Sunday as there is noone in school)

I'm considering adding a few cherry shrimp next half term but need to research them a bit more 1st (dont know if i can keep them in an unfiltered tank)

I will try and add some more pictures (but i only have access to the camera on my mobile phone so they wont be as good as the others on here)

Ah, Im glad to see people actually doing research before going out and buying a betta and a "betta death trap" tank.

I wouldnt reccomend using melafix, because it has stuff in it that will damage the labrynth organ(the bettas organ that allows it to breath atmosphieric oxygen), and possable kill the fish.

The best thing, in my opinion, for damaged fins would be VERY clean water, and aquerium salt(1/2 tsp. per gallon.) I would to a 100% watter change on that tank once a week. Even though it is a larger tank, it still needs to be kept clean for your little guy.

Also, if you want to put shrimp in his tank, I warn you now they may very well become betta snacks, so i would reccomend a cheeper alternative to the cherry reds, like Ghost shrimp. Granted they dont have the cool red color like the cherry reds, they are much cheeper $0.75 here where I live, so its not going to kill your wallet to replace any eaten shrimp :)

I'm sure he's glad you saved him from rotting in his little cup :good:

Best of luck!
