I'm sorry if this poll comes up often in this forum. I looked under search and found nothing.

Yes, they help remove Nitrate, (use for food) and make the fish feel comfy. It also makes the tank more realistic and pleasing to the eye, as compared to hot pink fake plants that hurt your eyes. Ouch :X

is there a newbie forum for people interested in using real plants?!?!?!?!?!?!

Uhm, fake plants remove Nitrate? I thought all fake plants did was give the fish places to hide/spawn and provide for the scenery. Wasn't aware they could eat. ;)

There is a benefit in it gives the fish somewhere but there are very few plants (I have seen none) that look like the real think, they may do in photos but not in 'real life' because of the way they move.

There are many things against having fake plants IMO, including expense and asthetics. Fake plants don't look good Mo Fo!!

I think there was some confusion here. This topic was about LIVE plants. I agree with dwarfs. Said it well. Plus for some fish, (my rams do this) they dig by the plant so the babies can eat bacteria off the plants cause some babies are so small they cant even eat bbs for days.

As for how many should you have? Well, start off with a few.. see how much they grow and if they spread and what not and see if you want more. Its really all up to you.

If used properly Fake plants can look very nice. Theres no point going for cheapo fake plants as they always look crap, and multicoloured ones area always a NO.

They are also beneficial to the fish as Cheese Specialist said for the fish to hide in.

And don't believe what everyone says, real plants aren't always better.

LOL! It's ok, I figured it was something like that. :D Topic says plants, poll says Fake plants. I almost missed it too. :)

Man this thread has me thinking that perhaps I should be replacing my plastic plants with live ones...I just don't want to deal with the hassle of lighting, etc. Maybe I'll read up on them to see how hard they are to grow. Though, personally, my plastic plants don't look all that bad because of how I have them arranged - IMO. And I don't have to worry about the little fishies eating them. :) Which, I've heard African Cichlids are very well known for.

definately a benefit. Ever since replanting and adding more plants to both my tanks the fish have been much happier.

EDIT
urgh! thought we were talking about real plants :X
