can goldfish go in the same tank as tropical fish , up to yet ive kept them seprate but friends say they would be ok togeather .i have one plec two guppies and one cloud fish in my tank ..please advice

Hi Suebee,

Goldfish and tropical fish are kept together in the same tank all too often, bit's really not adviseable.

Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) for example, should be kept at around 19C. Most tropical tanks are kept between 24 - 26C.

I would advise that to keep them together would comprimise the health and happiness of one or the other.

Cheers :good:

You could keep white clouds at 19 degree's without a problem i'd have thought, but i wouldn't keep one alone as the fish is likely to get stressed, they tend to prefer to be in groups (5 or more really...).

I did originally have goldfish in my tropical tank but I was told the warmer water speeds up their metabolism and ages them much quicker, causing shorter life spans. They also get too big for your average fish tank.

Goldfish will eat smaller fish, and grow too large for most aquariums. 20gal is considered as a minimum water volume per fish, but 30gal is preferable. White Cloud Mountain Minow will easily be eaten by an adolescent goldfish, past 5 inches, and they will then grow on to over 1foot in length (goldfish, not the white clouds) hense the large tank requirements.
I would personaly consider 22 centigrade to be the upper limit for goldfish, but others may have a differing opinion on this.

All the best

I agree. White clouds are really coldwater fish (at least in the same sense as goldfish are, not exactly correct but that's not the issue here), however guppies should be kept around 23 - 26C. They wouldn't be so happy in 19C.

Also, I agree with Rabbut, White clouds should only be kept with juvenile goldfish as adult goldfish may eat them.

If you were to have a tank of fish which are all roughly the same size and all prefer the same temperatures, i see no problem.

for about 15 yrs now, i have always had Goldfish and tropican fish as well as chichlids all in the same tank, lol. i've never had a problem, i just make sure i don't get any real big tropical fish. Right now i have 2 catfish one is about 8 inches long, I also have about 3 goldfish ranging from 5-9 inches and a coi fish, I have about 3 different kinds of guppies, and many many more to list, not sure of the names i keep the water temp around 71 degrees, i never have any problems, they are not stressed out, they do not fight, i have a 55 gallon tank and have many plants and logs for the fish to hide in, but they don't use them, only the catfish and the barb fish stay in them.

I do hope you don't mean a koi, as they are really not suitable for home aquaria. The largest koi recorded to date was over a metre long.

I agree with backtotropical, it is impossible to cater for the needs of both in one tank and they should be kept separately. Both will be happier in the long run :good:

when we had goldfish it seemed our glass got nasty pretty quick. when we got rid of them we put in 2 plecos and they cleaned it pretty quick. they also tripled in size in about 2 months. no more gold fish and our tank glass is always spotless. my honest opinion is keep them seperate, but i'm not an expert.
