Hello group
So I just bought a new Fluval edge for my buddy Maximus, a betta. I began the set up yesterday, added white sand as substrate and some water, being conditioned with bacteria and the dechlorinizer solution. Question is: the sand looks clumpy, and luckily the water is not cloudy, it's perfectly clear. I turned on he filter this morning, but after 5 minutes it stopped; so I gave it he filter a good cleaning, put it back but did not turn it on, fearing the sand might be clogging it up.

What do I do about the clumpy sand?
Do u guys think my filter will be okay? Should i turn it on or wait a couple days?

no idea, but the liquid bacteria wont work, read up on tank cycling in the beginners section of the forum linked in my signature.

Thanks for the tip Tizer. The clumpy sand I was talking about is just a large collection of bubbles with sand attached to them. I guess I did a poor job of of rinsing the sand before dropping it in the aquarium.

Just an FYI, i also have an edge, and i do not believe they are the best tank for a Betta, as they are surface fish, and come to the top for air. With the edge, as you know, there is only the smallish hole on the top. Also the lights tend to run pretty warm. So keep an eye on him and make sure hes happy in there. Good Luck!

Congrats on the Hagen Fluval Edge Home Aquarium ! I have always wanted one as it's one of the most aesthetically pleasing aquariums out there. My suggestion would be for you to rinse the sand out thoroughly. or use different substrate for the bottom. Has the filter started working again? As for the comment made above.. I agree. While this aquarium is just as visually stunning as your pet Betta, I'd have to agree that it's designed more for various species of goldfish that don't need to come up to the surface as often. Good luck!!!

yes thats right, because goldfish only stay small and dont outgrow them in a matter of a few months :good:

baaahahaha, please do not choose a goldfish for this tank. Tetras or something along that line would be fine.

Thank you for the comments. I do notice that the Edge is not very suitable for my pet Maximus (my betta) but I keep the water about half an inch from the top to give him sufficient breathing room, which he does utilize quite often. The sand simply needed a little turning to get all the bubbles out and the filter started up fine after I cleaned out the.... "magnetic thingamajig".

Maximus appears to be happy. Before putting him in, he was suffering with swim bladder disorder. Honestly, I didn't think he would come around, he had been dealing with SBD for over two weeks, maybe three; then all of a sudden, last night he appeared to be okay and started exploring his new home. I'm not sure what helped him: peas, all-in-one medicine, or the new filtered tank, perhaps the combination; but I'm so happy to see him swimming freely.

So far the tank looks great but the Fluval 25w heater sux. Any of you guys know of good heaters for a 6 gallon tank?
