Hi,
i originally set up my tank with fake plants, and didn't plan for live ones. I am now starting to think that i would really like live plants however i don't have the proper plant substrate. I only have regular sized to fairly fine gravel, good florescent lighting, temperature at 25, and a 12.5 gallon 10 inch tall aquarium. Would there be any nice beginner plants that would do well in my tank.
Thanks

Not knowing precisely how much lighting you have, you might try:

- Anubias spp.
- Java Fern
- Java Moss
- Brazilian Pennywort

That just names a few easy ones that come to mind. Knowing a little bit more about your set-up and what you want to do would allow for more suggesstions.

The reality is that the majority of plants are easy to grow. Concentrate on how fast the light levels are driving your tank, and decide on a dosing regime accordingly. Or, whether you need to dose anything at all. Plants need food just as much as your fish. How they get it is determined by how fast your lights are driving growth. In a low light situation, fish waste and tap water nutrients may suffice. If you find plant health suffering, consider adding TPN+ and flourish Excel.

A few people struggle with HC, but there isn`t a great many plants out there to catch you out. If you want quick growth go for stem plants such as Rotala sp. Try not to get bogged down with all the high light/low light plant stuff, along with pH, water hardness etc. Plants are adaptable to most things we throw at them, apart from being starved of nutrients.

Dave.
