I got 5 mollies 4 days ago to add to my 55 gallon community, as usual, I was getting ready to feed the fish, then as I noticed a little black fry swimming around, the question is, I know there are a lot more fry swimming in there, but how do I get them out, they are way too quick and there are too many fish and what should I do with the pregnant mollie, she is still huge!! I have a spare 30 gallon tank, should I just put her in there? And when is she due to release again?

Congrats on the babies! :D

You can either attempt to get them out (Which usually involves taking every single thing out of the tank.. :p ) or you can just let them live in there, and do a survival of the fittest. Depending on the fish you have, and how heavily planted the tank is, some should survive. :)

Yes, you can move the mother to the spare 30, provided it's cycled. It might be a good idea to keep the mothers in there, if you want to save and raise the fry. As long as you plant it well and give them lots of hiding places, they'll be okay. Molly fry are tough, and they'll figure out how to survive. :)

The last option is getting a small fry tank, probably 10 gallons or more to raise just the fry in.

Depending on what you plan to do, I can give you more advice.

She may still have more fry. Some Mollies have their fry over the period of a week or so. Otherwise, they usually have a batch every 4-6 weeks.

Hope this helps, and congrats again! :D

put her in a breeding net. they are inexpensive.

And very stressful for the fish. Particularly a big fish like a molly. It could easily make her abort the rest of the fry. Better to put the fry in the breeding net if you're going to use it; they won't mind. You just need to be careful to keep it clean and to feed them SMALL amounts of fry food.

Yep, Mollies can't really go in Breeding nets. They are just too big. Other, smaller Livebearers can go in them, but fry tanks, or just putting the fry in the breeding net is better. It wouldn't necessarily make her abort, but she could have birthing difficulties, and stress makes her more prone to disease, and you sure don't want her getting sick while she's pregnant.

Also, on a note for the fry...if you do plan to seperate them, as DwarfGourami mentioned, feed small amounts. But feed at least 3 times a day, preferably 5-6. :)
