Hi, my angel fish has some really shreded fins (for example half the top and bottom fins are riped off about 1 inch) the angel fish is not very big at the moment i think he is stunted in groath (srry about the spelling) i got him from my freind (he had it in is cichlid tank) along with three other angels. this is the worst of them all, i have him in my 10 gallon at the moment (lack of other tanks)
with 3 sword tails, and a otto, he seems to be doing fine he is not shy but he seems to stay at the surface of the tank. any help on how to get the fins back to they way they should be?

i cannot get pictures becuase my camera is really, really bad at fish and tank shots.

anything helps,

caboose

First of all the 10 gallon is no permanent home for an angel, but is fine for quar or medicating. Keep an eye on the swords, they can get nippy, and rehome them if possible. You will need to do 50% water changes daily for the first week, 50% every oter day for the second, then twice weekly of 50% for another week or two. Melafix in the water for the first week or so will help.

Some whiteness of the edges where they have been torn is normal, if it starts to spread towards the body or turns red you will need an antibiotic.

just to say i agree with everythng Tolak say's and think you should follow this advice.

while it's hard to see other people with badly looked after fish sometimes you should resist the urge to take them home to resuce them if you haven't a big enough home for them yourself. I appreciate your sentiments and why you've done this, and I can understand you want to do right by the fish, but if you only have the 10g tank he can go in then you should get him back to health with the methods above and then re-home him to someone with a biger tank.

I'd keep a very close eye on his fins if you decide to keep him. Stress can set off columnaris in angels, one of the first signs being frayed fins - if it does progress to that you will need to dose with Pimafix and Myxazin (but only if it does turn into that).

I agree with Miss W. though, although I appreciate the heart's there, the tank size isn't - and it's not really rescuing when you take a fish out of one unsuitable environment and put it into another.
