wouldn't risk it mate incase of pollutants and potential disease...also the grain size will cause it to compact into a solid sand bed which will go stagnant in time...best to buy aragonite rather than lose everything to cut down on this small cost
 
As Buddy rightly says, it really isn't worth the risk. You don't know what pollutants are in it, or parasites or pathogens. Also, I'm pretty sure that the sand on British beaches is silica based? If it is, then you would most likely struggle with diatoms
