Doh. It never rains but pours. BB was hurt by a younger male who I'd left in his tank (one of his sons), who I removed once I saw what had happened, and now he is having what I can only think of as seizures! He spins around very fast, apparently unaware of what he is doing or where he is. Sometimes bangs into things, including the substrate, which is thankfully sand. :( He's had about 5 today alone and on one occassion actually jumped out of his water and onto the glass under the lid. I have now made it impossible for him to jump out again and when I see him have one I cradle him in my hand until it passes. But obviously I can't be around 100% of the time and stop him hurting himself when he has any. Once he's recovered from the fit he's fine, apart from the injuries he's caused himself in the process. It's worrying the girls too who are keeping their distance.
I am hoping it's not permanent brain damage he has and he will heal. In the meantime is there anything I can do to help him? I hate the idea of him causing himself enough damage to kill himself. :-(
Tank is mature with external and internal filters. Tankmates, 4 adults females and 1 young female (a daughter). One male and one female bristlenose. Tanks 35gallons. He's lived in it all his life here with me. I'd say he's around a year old maybe a little over. So not old at all. Tank params are perfect.
I have added melafix and pimafix to the tank after todays clean to help with the injuries he has.
Anyone with any ideas for how I can help him?
Hugs,
P.

Sorry he not going to make it if he's have seizes it must be awful, he could of damaged his swim bladder as well, how long has he been like this.

Today is the first time I've seen him like this. The damage I came across yesterday morning. I have a feeling he may have had some yesterday too but not to this extent. :( My poor guy. Is there nothing I can do at all? :-(
Hugs,
P.

How often is he having the seizures does he look like he's had enough.

He's having one maybe every two to three hours. In between them he's swimming around as though nothing has happened and eating normally. He's always allowed me close contact and it seems to help him recover alot quicker when I gently hold him in the water.
I adore this fellow. He's a character unlike any in the gourami world and a fabulous father. The idea of losing him to this makes my already severely damaged heart (from my betta girl losses) feel beyond healing.
Hugs,
P.

I have a gourami that lets you touch it and he has beautiful eyes, so can image how you feel, give him another day bless him, there isnt really anything you can do for the poor fella, i know asprin is good for shock and stress and that about it.

Just been reading vitamin e is good for seizures so try some foods with vitamin e in them.

Vitamin E stimulates the production of fertility hormones. Also, it stabilizes other vitamins and the valuable unsaturated fatty acids in the food. Typical symptoms of fish lacking vitamin E are infertility and liver fattening.

He's not showing signs of problems elsewhere and fertility certainly hasn't been an issue for him. Happily he's not had another since before posting this topic but as I am about to take the kids to bed I'm not going to know for a bit. I'm finding myself constantly watching him now (his tank is behind me when I'm sitting on the computer). As my son has had epilepsy since 13 months old and recently had brain surgery (he'll be 11 in a few months) this feels.....I dunno, just so wrong! :-(
Thanks for your help Wilder. As ever you are very helpful. Just wish I could be more helpful to BB right now.
Hugs,
P.

Good luck, sorry about your son, glad he well now.

Just came back down and BB is still quietly dozing. :) I turned the light off in here so the only light is from the computer screen. He's much calmer. Will have to see how he goes over the next few days.
Brandon, my son, is doing well. He had a temporal lobe resection towards the end of march. His recovery has been remarkable. No seizures at all on his part since the surgery. :good:
As for vit E in fish foods, I have an extensive supply of different types and the baby food has the highest concentration of it. BB actually enjoys sucking it up so I shall make sure he gets some daily alongside the normal foods he has.
Hugs,
P.

BB died early this morning. He had a seizure before I got up and it killed him by the look of it. He'd shoved his head under the bogwood in my tank. :-(
He did quite well yesterday, only having a few fits and I was there to help him recover comfortably and without stress.
None of the girls had picked at him after he'd died and neither had the two bn's. They all seem a little out of sorts without him. I will get in a new male next week but for now, RIP BB. You were loved. :-(
Hugs,
P.
