When Your fish are not looking so well, here are some basic things you should do.

1. You should clean the fish tank-
~Use a scrubber to clean off the walls of the aquarium
2. You should do a water change-
~ at the most I would say 25%
3. Clean your gravel-
~With a siphen hose
~Again only 25% of the water should b removed.
Optionals-
~Raise the tempeature between 3 and 5 degrees. You should only have to be at 80 degrees, nothing more until it will start getting a little risky.
~Add aquarium salt(the box the salt comes in should tell how much salt to put in.

If your fish aren't well you should work out what is wrong with them before doing anything else. There are plenty of fish who wouldn't appreciate the increase in temp, just as there are plenty of fish that shouldn't have any salt added to their water.

Hi Betta,

The first three items on this list, people should be doing as part of their weekly maintenance, but you make a very good point- if you've been a bit lax lately then addressing these issues as a first port of call is no bad thing.

The word "optional" is possibly not the best one for the next part of your post though and we need to be very careful with it.

As you say, these two measures will apply spot on for certain fish and diseases, but as @ombomb identifies, they will kill other fish in other circumstances. It might be dangerous for someone less experienced to stumble across this post and do more harm than good following these "possible, situation dependant" (perhaps that's a better way of putting it?) treatments. Adding medication and isolation as two other possible solutions might contribute?

Hope this is helpful?

Jules.

These are just some basic things to do. Sometimes if your fish is sick it could be because you aren't doing your daily gravel and water changes. Raising the temperature is just a basic thing that I have done with myfish which causes them to get better. I know there are fish though like Neon tetras that would probally not enjoy the increase the temperature. I was going for a specific disease.

I was going for a specific disease.
Hi Betta :)

I agree with the others that you should be quite careful with "general advice". Your topic states "general sickness" and not "a specific disease" for a specific fish :/

what you recommend sound good (in general) for a betta - but certainly cannot be applied across the board for all fish. Many fish are intolerant to salt for instance.

Yes i know. I am just talking about some fish like bettas like u mentioned. Thanx for the reply. But u r right. I should ahve been more specific with the info. Also that is why I put the other info for more specific fish under optionals.
