Should a snail be included in most fish tanks to help clean house? If so, what is the best choice? When should the snail be added to the tank, when the tank is first set up or only after it's been running for some time? Thanks!

it's by no means essential but some people do add snails or other inverts for clean up.

they should be introduced and acclimitised as you would fish

I didn't bother buying snails.

In my LFS snails seem to come free when you buy plants! They are always mating!!!!!!!!!!

You usually get pest snails with plants and I wouldn't go down that route if you have live plants! They eat them!

I have recently purchased trumpet nails (for eating dead plant matter and turning the sand over) and apple snails (because they look great and algae is in their diet).

My tank set up is fairly new and they are all doing fine.
