The-Wolf
Ex-LFS manager/ keeper of over 30 danio species
many of us refer to specific fins like the dorsal and pectoral
I just thought it maybe a good idea to show where these fins are.
so with that in mind.....
1 ) Opercle (gill cover/ gill plate); This helps protect the soft fleshy gills from disease and damage.
2 ) Dorsal; Mainly used for stability, particularly when swimming at speed.
Most fish have at least one dorsal fin. There are some exceptions, such as the knifefish and man made goldfish types like ranchus . Many have two or even three.
3 ) Adipose: The purpose of the adipose fin is unclear.
4 ) Caudal (Tailfin); Used primarily to propell the fish through the water.
These come in many shapes from the basic to the extreame.
5 ) Anal; Acts as a stabilizer to prevent rolling.
6 ) Pelvic; Also aids in stability.
7 ) Pectoral; Used for side to side / up and down motion
