I have just finished writing up about colour genealogy on my site and I didn't know if you breeders out there might be interested in taking a look at it. There is allot of text and its not like reading a ladybird book but if it helps someone I am happy :)

Its here: Basic Colour Genealogy

:good:

Brilliant! I LOVE genetics. It's fascinating! I even have a section on my own website about axolotl genetics ^_^ Thanks for sharing. You have some gorgeous photos on the rest of the site, too. The big tank full of males is just beautiful. Will have to do that one day when every square inch of my house isn't being taken up by various tanks and cages

Well if I have got any thing wrong please do let me know as i am far from being an expert :D and thank you for the compliment, unfortunately that large divided tank has got broken so i will have to make a new one now

Here's something. What about fin types? Of all the years I've spent keeping bettas, I've not properly looked at their genetics until today. From what I've read, VT is dominant but that's all I know

I can look into it for you but this is how I understand it. I know DT is the least dominant and that by breeding with 2 DT parents you get lots of deformities in the fry like bent spines.

As far as I am aware it goes Vailtail, Delta, Super Delta, Halfmoon, Doubletail. Where Crowns fit in I don't know. The genes can then be put out on the table like I have with the colours. If you put a HM (lets say HH) with a VT (lets say VV) all the fry will be VT with 50% of the carrying the HM (VH) gene, if you then put two VH together you should get a split of 50% VV and 50% HH, but because the VT gene is so strong and the HM gene being so resesive you will find from this cross your HH genes will infact have delta or super delta tails almost like HvH, you might be lucky and get some full HM. Its only when you move on again and cross this F3 fry that you start to get the Full HM tail. With HM though quite often if you cross 2 fish with a full HM tail you will still get allot of SD.

Traits of the tail follow the fish down through the lines, its due to this that new tails have been developed like the halfsun and the CTPK. Its also how you get the huge dorsal fin on a HM to make it look like a full moon, but I wont give that one away ;)

If any one can add to this or I need correcting then please do as this is all fairly new stuff to me (you wouldn't think I have been keeping Bettas since I was 12) I always picked matching pairs of the best quality to breed with so genes wasn't playing a huge part. However when you are at a point where you can't keep Bettas, you fill your life with stuff about Bettas...or is that just me lol
