Barbs

I'd like to add barbs to my 38 gallon.  It currently houses a pink kissing gourami.  Will the barbs mess with her?  How many barbs can I get into a 38 gallon?

It depends on which barbs you add. More peaceful ones like cherries probably wouldn't, but tiger barbs probably would.
Though when kept in proper numbers they might keep the bickering to themselves rather than bothering her.
 
Are you planning on upgrading her eventually? They need an ~80g tank (150x45cm) when full grown, minimum.
