What is the purpose of the bar in the middle(circuled in red)?
What happens if it breaks?

The crossbrace across the top keeps the glass from bowing out in larger tanks. Without it, the glass will bow, eventually breaking.

any way to fix???

If you dont care about appearance, and the crack is in the middle, you could sister it up with a couple of pieces of plastic, one on top, one on the bottom. Use a good epoxy glue.

If you do care about appearance, or the crack is near the edge, you can orded a new top frame. Contact the aquarium manufacturer, or your lfs.

I got a price from All-Glass on a top frame for a 72 gallon bow a few weeks back. Only $40.

Ok, emergency, please reply. If the tank is now running, drop the water level to half full. This will decrease the pressure by half. Go to the hardware or diy store, & get a pipe clamp set with a long enough piece of pipe. Clamp that baby to hold it until you have time to empty & repair.

It looks like Tolak has already given you all the methods of fixing this :)

Is the frame made of metal or plastic? Where is it broken? :dunno:

there aren't 15 ways to fix it
either glue plastic on it as mentionned, or replace the top frame... since the tank is not running, the glass won't break...

You should look into replacing it before fixing it. I have a 55 gallon (second hand) tank that has a cracked center bar. The previous owner had tried to fix it, apparently, but it didn't work out too well.

I now have a wonderful snake tank!
