Bamboo Roots

i saw some nice looking bamboo roots at P@H today that were selling to go in with lizards etc. they looked kind of cool and a bit different to bogwood and with 2 or 3 lumps could look quite good as they were almost like wooden arches....

anyway i left them there until i could find out if they were safe for fishtanks. so has anyone used them before?

they were quite expensive at £20 each but just looked that bit different and would look great with a few large rounded stones

if you picture the root the other way round so it forms a few arches for the fish to go under etc etc you get the picture

heard before that they rot slowly mate so no good for a tank

Is it live bamboo?

lucky bamboo - Dracaena serenea (IIRC) I put it in my tanks and provided they have sufficient access to the air (3-4 inches above the surface of the water)as they are not fully aquatic they lived and grew well of course it would only work in an open top aquarium. The submerged leaves rot and die so you need to remove them when they start to look dodgy.

I've heard that bamboo rots from the inside out. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

no its not live bamboo its the woody root that would normally be underground. i would say about 4-5 inches thick.

I wouldn't trust it personally perhaps if you sealed it with a waterproof paint but that would cause it to loose its natural appeal. Perhaps a mangrove tree would make your desired root structure.

a mangrove would be superb but ive never seen one for sale thats not resin/plastic
