I got a Youngish (2 inches) bala shark from a friend (he was eating all her shrimp and it was making her mad) . I know that they are schoolers normally, but I havent got anymore room at the time to get him some buddies. My question is though, he swims upside down or at an angle all the time! He is eating great, swimming around, etc. I was just wondering if this is a normal characteristic of balas or does he have a balance problem?? :fun: Otherwise, he seems perfectly healthy!

Mine does that too & I thought there was something wrong with him too
I think they all do that, I've noticed mine sleeping pointing straight down and swimming at crazy angles
But I could be wrong and maybe theres something wrong with both of ours  j/k
I did have to buy another 1 though because the 1st couldn't settle in without a buddy,he'd wander the glass aimlessly at night while all the other fish slept, but now he's great, and they both sleep & swim crazily together :D

wuv~

Thanks for putting me at ease! :D Im glad mines not the only one! Thats funny. I wonder why they do that? Well, maybe I'll have to find my guy a friend... He doesnt wander aimlessly, but maybe he'd like someone to do crazy stuff with. ;)

I know, but like i said in my first post, I dont have the room! I barely have room for this guy! He puts me over my max for my tank! :X

mine really shouldn't be in my tank either
Its only a 29 gallon , they were itty bitty when I got them and they've already grown so much in 8 weeks but I can't bring myself to bring them back to the store, they seem so happy and I would worry about whatever became of them,so now I have a really good reason to upgrade to a bigger tank someday ;) .....for the balas...... ( that's the line I'll feed the hubby)
glad I could help a little :D

You will know when your sharks need rehoming as the tip of their nose will start to go white (i presume it where they bash it on the tank sides), C4f if you really cant get your bala a friend give him to someone who can, they need to be kept with others of their own kind and can become aggressive if they are unhappy :-(

In my oppinion the smallest tank these fish should be kept in is a 75g and that is only half the size they deserve.

My Bala has taken to schooling around with our Congo Tetras! The tetras used to school with the rainbow bosamanis too! Im sure he would prefer another bala, but he met his need by crossing the breed barrier and finding some new friends! I'll be sad when we gotta say goodbye...

I'm glad he fit right in
maybe he'll be able to stick around for awhile,I'm not sure how fast they grow but surely it's not THAT quick

Balas can easily reach 6" in a year and with a protein rich diet even bigger  if im right a 29g is about 3ft long so your bala will have to go within 14 months or so :-(

Bummer :( Im going to have to find some place really nice for him to go when hes done here with me!

I'm positive I'll have a bigger tank within a year and a half....I saw a 100 gallon with stand and everything for $400 today and it was SOOOO hard to not beg the man to hold it for me while I scraped up the cash, but I resisted -_-
and since my balas eat like kings I guess they'll be that big soon enough
I'm sure you'll find him a great home c4f's (when the time comes that is) ;) :D
