i recently set up a 380 gallon tank containing 5 torpedo barbs, 5 balas, a banded gourami, 15 guppies and 30 neon tetras, there was a female betta in there but she died a few days ago, there was no physical signs i could go on about her death, she was in perfect shape.
anyway,
KiKi, one of my five balas, has a mysterious wound on her belly, it looks really painful and it got allot worse yesterday, she is still typical KiKi behaviour-wise, but that wound never ceases to baffle and concern me.
does anyone know of a condition that could have caused it?
she's only about 3 inches long at this point in time.

now another Shark, christmas, has a large grey patch on his dorsal fin, i have treated the water with protozin in case it is the first signs of a fungal infection what could this esentially be?
he seems to just sit there and stare out of the edge of the tank for god knows how long, then i open the top and immediately he darts up for his food.
At the moment i can't test the water, my testing kit still hasnt arrived, i know answerer's worst nightmare.
But what i can give you is, i did a 20% water change yesterday, is it worth cleaning it again today?

oh! forgot to say, this is my first tank so excuse me if i sound a little stupid. i've done research and nothing has come up about KiKi's wound, so i am taking it is ACTUALLY a wound? caused by another fish?

How long exactly has the tank been set up? Was it cycled at all?

If it hasn't been cycled then your problems will almost certainly be down to water quality. Do some more, larger water changes; up to 50% or even more. Use warm, dechlorinated water. Make sure you do nothing to the filter, except possibly a gentle rinse in old tank water, nothing else.

There's no real way of telling what exactly has happened to Kiki; but most wounds will heal perfectly well on their own if you keep the water quality up. Best of luck.

it has been going for 3 weeks with fish in there, left 4 weeks to cycle, sorry i was away.
i can't get a photo at this point, my phone is currently on charge. but to put it more descriptively, KiKi's wound has improved slightly thank god, but it looked like something had eaten away at her belly, there was scales hanging off the wound and she would barely swim or eat off the gravel anymore unless the filter was cleaned, then she would eat. she now looks to be recovering, even though she gave me a scare this afternoon when she looked dead, but she started moving again. Christmas's grey fin patch has reduced but now it has a red line on the same fin and his tail fins have a tinge of yellow on them, he doesnt have any wounds but his fins are clamped and he darts about the tank when i come into the room to take a look on progress. my first guess was costaisis so i immediately started a protozin treatment hence why the grey patch has receeded.
thanks for all the help so far, and i'm glad no intervention is needed apart from water changes.

never mind, KiKi died, my sister told me when i got back from work :-( but Christmas seems alright.
