Is UK Baking Powder the same as Bicarb ? I have run out of bicarb but have baking powder and want to up my PH.

I have mixed it with tank water in a cup but it is fizzy..........

It depends, baking powder normally has an acid added to it, where as Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (bicarb) is just that NaHCO[sub]3[/sub], look on the ingredients and see what it says.

I have three pots of baking powder to choose from !!! (hate baking...)

Dr Oetker : rice flour, sodium bicarbonate.

Tesco : disodium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, rice flour.

Dr Oetker double action : disodium diphosphate, sodium bicarbonate, monocalcium phosphate, maize starch.

Any of these any good ?

Thanks

You want baking SODA!

Baking powder contains baking soda, but it is not pure sodium bicarbonate.

To raise the KH without raising the GH, add sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO[sub]3[/sub]), commonly known as baking soda. 1/2 teaspoon per 100 Liters raises the KH by about 1 dH. Sodium bicarbonate drives the pH towards an equilibrium value of 8.2.
