So exactly how much fish water can you drink without dieing?

There's nothing like a phone ringing to distract you while you are setting a syphon in motion.

I just take a drink of something aqnd try not to think about it, to be honest putting your finger in your mouth would probably transfere more germs that fish water so dont worry.....you will be alot more carefull from now one, "once bitten, twice shy" as they say!

The best way to start the syphon is to obviously put the end in your bucket (or where ever the water is going to run to), stick the other end in the tank and fill the vacuum tube with water. Then raise the vacuum end up so that the water starts flowing out. Once it starts running down, just stick it back in the water and the water will start flowing on it's own (the gravity of the water runnig out will "suck" the water for you). I never suck on mine to get it started. It may take you a time or 2 to get the hang of it but it definitely works.

ooh, about 0.0001millilitres and you're a gonner! Sorry, sorry - probably you could pretty much drink it and come to no harm assuming your tank wasn't a disease infested swamp....though personally I'd not be inclined to try it.

If you follow the directions rdd1952 gave you, you'll never have to suck on a siphon to get it started again. It just takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you'll never forget how to do it. It's one of those things that are well worth the effort to learn.

I usually suggest that members fill their kitchen sink and put a bucket on the floor to learn how to use siphons.

Well I haven't been in that situation till now, and I always suck... It's just that I make sure I don't have any distractions... I tried the other method, but never succeded, will try some more...

Well I remeber one time I was using a air stone with tubing in my hospital tank and I was treating for ich and used medicine that stained the tube blue and recently I used it in my 20g but my air pump couldn't blow any air through it and I didn't think anything about it and I put my mouth on the end where the air tubing was blue and blew then I saw the blue and spit it out and I thought I'd have to call posion control or something but my mom said to rinse my mouth out with water and I'd be fine, well I'm ok.

Muwha ha ha I am now a resurecter.

As of today, I have mastered the suck-less-syphon. Thank you for the suggestions
I filled the tube in the tank, then stuck one finger over the end and into the bucket and the pressure just carries it on running. Good trick.
