Why is it that some fish gobble up a piece of food, then spit it out, then gobble it up, then spit it out, then gobble it up, then spit....... you can see where I'm going with this!

And then they finally munch away quite happily - until the next morsel is spotted!

It is usually because:

The food is too hard, and by chewing then spitting it out they are softening it.

OR

They enjoy playing with their food.

OR

They are picky when it comes to food. (*cough* Bettas *cough* :p)

I have seen my betta do that right enough, but my angels do it as well - and my tetras - and my harlequins! Hmmm. I either have fussy fish or they are the felines of the fish world. And its usually when I feed frozen food I see that, so it can't be that they don't like it - surely! It all gets munched up anyway. :D

Do you defrost the frozen food in tank water before feeding?

Yes - I defrost in a special bowl, which is kept for the fish food, before I put it in.

My cats eat better than my fish do. Except the firemouth, he just eats everything he gets a hold of.

it's also caused by the food being too large. Remember they have no thumbs no fork and knife are out of the question. Try crushing flakes (etc) into smaller pieces.

I try and do that where I can but I guess the bloodworm is too big for some of them yet! Specially my baby angels! Awwww.
