I went out this morning....not even meaning to go to the LFS. But I was near the LFS. So I thought I'd drop in and say hello to their fish and see if my fave fish there (in a display tank) was OK. I never meant to buy fish. I never do.....

So I go in there, all the staff there know me and say "we have some really nice comet platies you'd like"..... :shifty: So I go look.....chanting "I do not need fish, I do not need fish......".....and I wasn't too fussed. Till I saw one male....he is more white than yellow with twinbars on the tail and a bright red dorsal fin  "Yes, I'll take him" I muttered and she proceeded to catch him. As she is bagging him up she says "we also have some nice red males down there" pointing 4 tanks down.....again I start chanting "I do not need fish, I do not need fish......". And then a red velvet twinbar/wag male catches my eye. "Erm, I'll take him also" :*) ....shes trying not to laugh as shes bagging him up as well. I walk around the rest of the tanks. I could have bought about 8 more platies/swordies....SEE....I do have willpower :p Its not about the 2 fish I DID buy but more about the 8-10 fish I DIDN'T buy.

So I get home with my new boys and go to acclimate them to their new quar tank. Till i realised a platy I bought last week has escaped. She his nowhere in the tank  I look behind the tank, around the tank etc. The cat is inside. The lid of the tank is slightly ajar. The cat has a satisfied smile on her face. I assume the cat has killed the fish :byebye: Half hour later when I transfer the new fish from the bags to the tank the net falls under the stand. There I find my missing platy.....on the carpet  I pick her up and put her back in the tank. She swims off like nothing happened. I just got home from work and she is a little quiet but eating and swimming. Her tail fin seems a little shredded at the edges. I have added some salt to the tank....I am sure it is from her thrashing about on the floor when she escaped.....

Fins crossed :D

Aww, glad to hear the Platy is all right! She seems like a tough little girl!

Have any pictures of the new guys??

Have you considered duct tape for your lid? Maybe you should outfit them with emergency locator beacons. Little flashing strobes strapped to their necks... :p (Do fish have necks?) Darn escapees!

They sound pretty! Go on, go back and get the others - you know you want them!

Glad your platy is still surviving but i wouldn't use salt in the tank if you have catfish in there; you will get just as good recovery results as using Melafix as using salt and it won't bother/harm your other fish in there and it is quite good for helping repair damaged fish fins :)

No catfish in the tank. I am aware that salt and catfish don't mix........

Polard.....what a fantastic suggestion about the duct tape. I hadn't even thought of it!! Thanks for the tip. As for the other fish at the LFS.....I really don't have the room -_-.....and trust me, I don't need encouragement :p

Anna, the new guys are in the quar tank which is hard to photograph (it is at ground level)...I will try and get some for you though
