I've always wondered about the many background designs on the shelves at LFS's. Besides adding a little color and such to the tank, what other purpose do they have? I know some "smaller" fish like to have a background to feel "safe".

Do you even need them?

"need" probably not in most cases.

But to hide all the ugly cables / wires and pipes (in my opinion) definitely.

To accentuate the colours of your fish, certainly.

But at the end of the day, it's personal choice.

I don't have BackGrounds on any of my Tanks, tho i have been thinking about putting them on.

Cables are hidden but maybe they would look better if they had backgrounds on them?

I think plain and simple backgrounds are the best.. Like blue or black.. not patterned, as i feel they can make tanks look a little messy (not always). But as Bloozoo says, its all about personal preference.

I used the black back of one of the colourful picture ones.. (see my sig, although its a bit small)

I use a blue backround in my goldfish tank and it makes the colors in the fish stand out amazingly well... but i dont use it on ant of my other tanks... I personally like the simple ones better

Thats my 2 cents

I use black bin liners. A dark background IMO can add a bit of depth and make the fish stand out. I've got one tank that's a mirror and I hate it!

My only tanks are betta 1.5 gals so it's kinda impractical to have background. But when I get a bigger tank I will definately go for black.
