is it important to have a background plant or a background of any kind on a tank?

That, my friend, is PURELY up to you!!!!

Define what you mean by 'important'....

I don't think it helps out the fish at all except for their imagination.

will it help the fish or not

I have a curtain of valis at the back of my tank, and i find it offers a bit of security for the fish (at all levels because it is a tall background plant), and they spend a fair bit of time swimming in and out of it. When i had dwarf gouramis, and the male would chase the females a bit, they used to use it to escape or to feel more secure when he wasn't around...

That aside.. i think it looks nice and natural too...

Cheers

well ive just opted for a blue background im told it makes everything in the tank more visual and it looks nice

Yep, black for me too, but it's all personal preference of course.
