I got back from a week long vacation to Cancun. I didn't lose a single fish but one of my rainbows is sick. She has an open sore on her right side just below her pectoral fin. The sore looks like it might have a secondary infection going on but I'm not sure, also the scales around the sore are sticking up but not all of her scales.

I lost another rainbow a few months back to the same disease. I forget what it is called but a open sore suddenly appeared on her in the exact same spot. The name of the disease started with an A, Any ideas?
Anyway I did a water change added 1/2 the recommended dose of salt and a med called triple sulfa by API. Is there anything else I should do?

My other problem is in my quarantine tank I have a reading of 1ppm of ammonia. The only fish in there is a large female swordtail. I was having trouble before I left with the ammonia level, but I added some media from my 55gal and thought i had it under control, but now it's back up again. Now I'm debating weather to clone the tank from my 55gal. again (55 has my sick rainbow in it), or do a bunch of water changes until it cycles completly.
The water stats in my quarantine tank:
ph-7.6
Ammonia-1ppm
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-15ppm

all advice is apriciated,
thanks mikaila31

The open sore is an ulcer.
signs are, open sores on the head and/or body, with reddened edges. If they are the results of a systemis infection, then on or more other signs of the underlying problems are likely, e.g. dropsy, exophthalmia, fin rot, and emaciation. Secondary infection with fungus is common.

Cause: various bacteria, including Aeromonnas, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, and vibrio.

All can be treated with ulcer medication and anti bactria medications

Open sores can soon turn into holes, i would medicate with maracyn one and two.
Ulcer are pink or red with a circling of dead white skin around the edges.

Hey, you got it lordotterby. Aeromonnas was what my other Rainbow died of a few months ago. I'm pretty sure this is the same thing, it looks the same and is in the exact place where my other rainbow got it. I've started treatment with triple sulfa and she seems to be getting better after only 24 hours. Her scales have started to laid back down around the wound and the wound is starting to look a lot better.

thanks,
