One of my 2-month old halfbeaks got hit by something when I was doing a water change, and by the time I noticed it, it had turned off-white, was on it's back, unable to swim, and gasping for breath. Anyone who's been here will recognise a fish moments from death...

So I put it in a breeding trap in the off-chance it recovers. An hour later, it's leveled itself off somewhat, keeping it's head pointing upwards and staying close to the surface. By the evening, it's actually swimming about, but unsteadily. Two days later, it finally starts to eat, and there's only a small white patch (the bruising?) to show any injury.

I've never yet seen a fish come back from the "upside down, on the sand, gasping" stage until I'd met this plucky little girl. All I can say is that juveniles are much hardier than the adults!

Cheers,

Neale

PS. Anyone interested in seeing this clutch of babies, stop by my web page. There's a new movie that shows them swimming about. They'll need rehoming soon!
