I’ve been brought up with fish all my life however I’m relatively new to having fish of my own , I currently have 9 danios they are mixed I have 3 albino 3 leopard and 3 zebra , I have currently 2 female who are massive in size and I am aware that they are carrying eggs but I’m just wondering what do do , I went into pets at home and they recommend a breading tank and to put the females in their however my friend who is very very good with fish had said to put a male and female in the breading tank , I’m really unaware on what to do because I know that sometimes with pets at home fish they aren’t always the most reliable I believe, I would love some help as I am willing to bread the fish!

If you want to breed the fish, have 2 tanks and separate males and females for about 4 days. Then put a male and female together in a tank that has lots of plants (Java Moss is ideal). Leave the adults in the tank for 24-48 hours then put them back in the main tank.

The adults usually breed within 12-24 hours of being put together.

After the female has shed her eggs she will be noticeably skinnier than she was.

The eggs hatch after a few days and the babies hang on the sides and substrate for a few more days. When they start swimming you start feeding them.

The following link has information about preparing food for baby fish.

Danios are egg laying fish so you would need a male to fertilize the eggs. A breeding tank can be used or if you have plenty of hiding places for the fry you could just leave them to fend for themselves. Depends on how much fry you want.

At the minute I know for sure that I have two female, right now I have one male and one female in the internal breading tank together as pets at home suggested but I have been reading around and I’m not sure that it is the best thing to do

@Colin_T replied at the same time as I did and with more detailed instructions, so I would follow what he said. If you do not have live plants like Java fern then use plastic plant, lots of marbles or stones on the bottom also can give hiding places for the fry. They like to drop their eggs around leafy plants and the marbles and small stone will give the eggs somewhere out of site to sit instead of laying on a bare bottom where they can be easily eaten.

Can you post a picture of the internal breeding tank?

If it's a small plastic tank that floats around the top of the aquarium, that is useless and will not help at all. Take it back and get a refund for it.

A breeding tank for zebra danios should be about 2 foot long, x 10-12 inches wide x 10-12 inches high.

Fill the breeding tank with clean dechlorinated water.
Have a thin layer of gravel or several layers of glass marbles on the bottom. The eggs can drop between the gaps in the marbles and the parents can't get to them.
Have a layer of Java Moss (or other plants) over half the tank.
Have a heater in the tank. Set it on about 26C.
Have an established air operated sponge filter in the tank.
Have a cover for the tank to stop the fish jumping out.

Introduce the female fish in the morning and add the male in the evening. They usually breed the following morning. Morning sunlight shining thru a window can help stimulate breeding.
