I am babysitting two Julidochromis transcriptus for a friend who is away for three months. He told me that the julies were young and unsexed. Surprise! Surprise! I count 6 juveniles in my African tank.
Here is one of them. The Julie parents are vigilant but not overly aggressive. I am amazed how peaceful this tank is.

He better come back soon.

I’m still babysitting around 5-6 j. transcriptus juveniles. While 4 juveniles are around 15-20 mm in length there are two juveniles that are only 2 mm. What might explain the difference in size?

Have you had them for long enough for 2 broods? They can be close together sometimes.

I never saw them as fry. I first identified them on June 7 when they were 1 mm in length but with clear black and white stripes.
