Hi,

Some time ago I had two tanks set up...at some point during this I introduced two blue rams to the set up, however the next day one was dead, I took it back to the shop, got another, and then the next day both were dead (whitespot). Soon after this I gave up on this particular tank as most of what I seemed to put in there died, and I didn't have much in it.

I transferred the Danio I had left in it to my other tank and cleared this one out. I left a few inches of water in it, mostly because I've been waiting for someone to help me lift it to get this last couple of inches of water out before I sell it...

I happened to glance into it today (we're talkingmaybe 2 months since I emptied it). I noticed a few tiny critters swimming around. I instantly thought 'Ha, have I got pondlife in my tank?'. I got a glass and scooped one out to take a look....and on closer inspection it really does look like a baby fish, pretty much translucent, eyes, fins, tail etc....not much like an insect or something. The only livebearers in that tank were the blue rams and that was months ago. How is this possible?

How fast do they grow...is it possible that I just never noticed them and they have been living there for months by themselves...Or perhaps another fish laid eggs in there?

I have no idea what these babies might be, fish wise...but I am tempted to try and care for them rather than let them die, but I have no idea how to do this. I should put them in a smaller tank? Will they need heating? If I put a filter in there...won't they just get filtered?!

Do you think there is any chance of survival? Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Cass.

Edit: Having managed to take a slightly closer look at the biggest one (about 8mm), they kinda look baby Danios. :)

when i bred guppies (like most fry they also start off tiny!!) i used to keep them in 5gl unfiltered tank (also worried about the filter sucking them up) no gravel or anything within the tank just 1 live plant from the tank (they may feed on this!) i fed them crushed flake etc and live daphnia. every day i would change about 1/4 of the water in the tank (to compensate for the lack of filtration) using a clear measuring jug and pouring into a bucket. this way u can check the jug (firstly) to make sure u have not scooped out any fry, and the bucket as a second check before disposing of the water.

Every fourth day, i would net the fry out and put them in a suitable sized container (in water from the tank) (possibly a second jug?) and completely clean the water from the tank (this would rid the tank of any remains on the bottom etc.

I found the regular water changes made my guppies grow really quickly!!

As an alternative u can get a breeding trap from your LFS. i have one that comes as a flat pack (a net and a square frame) you could hang this in your main fish tank with the baby danios inside!! this way they stay within ur filtered tank etc but cannot be eaten or filtered!
