hi & help,
we have one surviving black mollie baby who is currently residing in our hospital tank, he/she is about 10mm big & im a bit worried, we are going on holiday in 8 days time & the only way for our baby to have any chance of survival is to go in with the big boys in our community tank. is she too small??? will she get eaten??? we will be using an automatic feeder for the big tank. our hosp tank doesnt have heating the temp has been kept constant since baby has been in there by our flats central heating. we dont have a separate feeder for the hosp tank so dont really have a choice. the baby was one that i saved after the rest of the mollie fry were eaten by our greedy community tank, i was determined after the little blighter had survived our barbs it wasnt going to be eaten so thats when i fished it out & set up the little tank for it.
we only added mollies to our community tank recently so i dont have much experience in caring for fry, but id like to do all i can for the lone survivor to 'make' it if i can but as we're not going to be around for 14 nights its a bit hard & im feeling guilty already. i think the main risks to the baby are our tiger barbs & maybe yoyos, i cant see anything else in the tank making a meal of the little one.
help

hi millym :)

If the fry is bigger than your other fish's mouths then the fry will probably be fine.
But if he is smaller than the other fish's mouths then I'm not too sure what you can do  Hopefully someone else will answer your question better.

Good luck

Don't know if this helps but I have never put mollie fry in a special tank, they stayed in with the adults. Mostly because I didn't think to do anything . From one mollie I had 24 fry over three different births. As Whiskerz says if it is too big to fit in the adults mouth it should be ok, but there are no guarantees. :)

you go can go out and buy a cheap breeding net. I think mine cost me like $6.00 and you just hook it onto the main tank and it fits right in and it has netted sides so the baby can't get out, and the big fish can't get in.

Although I don't know what you would do about feedings. Fry need to be fed atleast twice a day, I feed mine 3-4 times a day.
