My pair of kribs just came out of hiding and proudly took a troop of babies round the tank with them!! They have had eggs many times before but never got them to the freeswimming stage, just ate them.

Any tips for keeping them alive till they are big enough to rehome? Once I saw them I added some liquifry and some crushed flake. I am more worried about other fish eating them. I do not have a suitable spare tank to use as a growout, so they will have to stay where they are for now.

What sort of size/age are they ready to move on?

Bump!

And...

On the 27th when they first went for a wander with the proud parents, there were 8, now only 5. How big is the usual hatching?

I don't know.... but my sneaky kribs just wandered out their cave with about 22 tiny fry following dutifully..... omg I'm a grandma!!!

Does anyone have any advice on what to do to raise them successfully? Mine are in a community tank with 2 rams, 4 guppies, some cockatoo fry and a couple of otos. Help!!

Jon, how are yours getting on? Hope they're doing okay.

Hi Guys
I am following this thread now as there are around 20 babies following mum around. What a great suprise!
I have done a search on this forum and it seems some recommend removing the parents and babies and some reccomend just the babies.
What to do?
Regards
David

removing depends on the set up. in a community tank its best to leave the parents with the young if you havent got a spare tank to put them into. if you have a spare tank then the babies can be transferred easily enough but i only moved mine when the male started to eat them. if you keep the babies seperate then a sponge filter is needed to stop the babies being sucked in.
in the community tank the parents seemed to know the filter wasnt good and managed to keep the babies away from it.
as for feeding them, the parents can herd them to places where the most algae and small things are but i added some baby flake food to the water twice a day and as they get bigger they can eat brine shrimp and crushed flake.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I've got newly hatched 'wrigglers' from my pair of kribs. The male is guarding the cave where the eggs hatched and is really attacking the female when she gets too close. The pair are really going at each other and fins are fraying. Should I move momma to my qt tank until dad settles down?

hi pondfreak
maybe the female is eating the young so the male is protecting them. with me it was the other way round.
if you do have another tank then yes remove the female. Keep an eye out for the male eating them too as this is common with the first few batches. The male will also pick them up to move them around so dont panic if you see him do this.
If you want to get a few to survive then if the male isnt doing his job and some are eaten swap the female for the young and raise them yourself, its really easy to do. Make sure though you have a sponge filter in with them. good luck :)

hi black angel and thanks for the reply! :D

Maybe that is the reason for the hostility. I do have a qt/hospital tank running and empty, so mom is going there for a while. This is the fourth time for this pair to breed. The fry are so tiny, if they weren't wriggling I'd not be able to see them. Maybe this is the time, I'll get survivors.
