I thought I only had females (and I was quite annoyed with this) but late last night as I was doing a final check of the tanks I saw one little halfbeak swimming in the plants up top. I was so surprised! I had to put him with my baby goodeids for now because I don't have any tanks ready for him (and there is only the one). Now I have to figure out who is the male!

Post pics, i could tell ya who the daddy is :)

How long have you have these fish, could it be possible that the fry is from the female's previous encounter with a male at the lfs or else where? I dont know a whole lot about halfbeaks, but if they are like any other live bearing fish, they can store sperm for a few months and use that to birth several spawns.

These are black halfbeaks:

I wish I had some good batteries for my digital camera but sadly that will have to wait until I get paid.

I have had these halfbeaks (they are Wrestling Half-Beaks Dermogenys pusillus) for probably about 4 to 6 months (I would have to go check my records and they are in the basement so that will have to wait). The only explanation I can come up with is that maybe they are just now maturing? I will have to see if I can get them to stay still for a few seconds so I can try to identify the male.
