Baby Fry Tank?

Hello,

I now have molly fry in my 10 gallon tank in a breeding net and as you can imagine its crowded! I was wondering if i could get a small 1-2 gallon tank and if i did get one does it need a heater??? They have kit at my LFS that has a gravel filter, is that ok for fry? Any suggestions?

It's better than a net, yes you will need a heater to keep the temp stable.

If you realy plan on keeping any further fry, i sugest getting a 5g +

under gravel is best for fry tank, treat the tank like any other water changes ect.

Ok thanks for the help and im gonna get a 5 gallon kit too. Do you know how long it will take the fry to grow up? i know it depends really on the fry themselves but is there a guess or something?

I had about 60 silver molly fry born in mid december - I`ve lost about 20 at various stages (all water parameters are fine) so can only put it down to natural causes.

In relation to them growing the biggest is now about 1 inch in length the smallest is about 1 cm in length - I separated about half of them (the biigger ones) and they are growing fairly well but with different speeds, the other half (smaller ones) are in another tank and are doing the same - growing at different speeds.

I tried this to see if the bigger ones were bullying the smaller ones for more food - obviously not.

By my reckonings the smaller ones will be ready between 4-6 months e.g. 1 inch in size which is the size I believe they can be "sold" to the local lfs.

So it seems that the fry grow at different speeds for an unknown reason - so the largest one has grown to 1 inch in about 6 weeks - the smaller ones look as though they will take about 4 months.

Thanks alot Phil!!! This has really helped me out alot and you gave me alot of detailed information. Maybe we can chat sometime about raising fry seeing as how you know alot more than me . Also how do u get sooo many fry. In this batch i only got 12.
