Hi! Looking for some advice from all you experienced people please.

Just checked my tank and I have a new baby fish! I'm absolutely hyper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got mollies, sepa tetras, gouramis and new additions on sunday of otocinclus and cory cats.

Only one baby so I guess the rest were eaten? Poor things.

My first question is do you think the baby is likely to be a molly baby? Its a miniscule black fish.

I caught it in a net and have it in a plastic bag - half water/half air - floating in the water for now so its not eaten! My hubbie is going to the aquarium shop after work to get a breeding tank so we can keep it separtae.

Can anyone please advise me how to care for it?
What's the chances of survival?
Do I just feed it the normal fish food?
How quickly will it grow?
How big does it have to be before I let it out with the others?

Sorry, so many questions. I am a newbie ;-)

Many thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to answer.

Buy a little net breeder not the plastic breeding traps.
Most likely candidate is molly fry. of which threre will be future broods every month or so,
Can be fed with liquifry No2 for livebearers, newly hatched brineshrimp, or just very finly crushed flake (by fine I mean to a powder almost)
They will grow fairly quickly if waterchanges and varied diet is employed.
Really needs to be around 25mm in size before let loose with those othet tank mates IMO
I hope this was of some help

Thats really helpful. Thanks so much.

Still dead excited! :)

I have had molly babies before, and they did really well. Out of 20, 15 survived and i still have all of them! I have three tanks with five in each. Anyway, At the beginnig, I found the liquid food to be the best choice. As the fish got older, I changed to crushing flakes to a powder. When you decide that the fish can "hold its own" and be able to get food easily, put it in a net breeder in the tank with the other fish for a day. It will get used to the chemical balance, the other fish, etc. The other fish will recognize that the baby is not food also! The next day, put the baby in and observe the other fish. Make sure that there are some plants the baby can hide in if it needs it. Getting a breeding tank is a great idea, that is what i did too. :)
