Okay so we bought 20 quarter sized red melon baby discus and at first we had 2 die by getting sucked up by the filter so we turned it off. Then we kept having more and more die and this morning we found 3 more dead ones. We checked the ph and everything else and everything is fine and so we also did a water change today. But still do any of you know what's going on? Has this happend to you because we don't want to loose anymore. :(

Thank you Desi

I dont have baby ones but I do have them in the size of 2-3 inches

My guess would be to check their bodies for signs of bacterial infection, also what is the temperature in the tank?

I have them in a 45ish gallon hexagon and the tank is set at 80-81 degrees F.

What are the full water parameters & where did you get the fish - breeder or store?

How was the tank cycled?

The smaller they are, the more touchy they are about water. Most breeders can raise larger discus in harder water with a higher pH, smaller angels are intolerant of this. If you don't have really soft water, with a pH around 6.5 you need to look into a ro unit. The best way to diagnose a problem after a death is to get a microscope & prepare slides. With breeding expensive fish like discus this is a wise investment. This will rule out or confirm any bacterial problems.

Another thing to look into is food. What have you been feeding them, & how much?

(edited because I'm trying to type & hold a conversation with 4 people at the same time.)

There is no ammonia in the tank and the ph is at 6.5 and had only been cycled twice before we put babies in it. We bought them from a breeder off of the internet We have had them for about a month. We also have another tank with bigger discus (from 2-5 inches) and the guy said to put in stuff called Melafix as it helps reduce fish diseases and he told us they loved that and so I also put a little of that in their tank.

They are eating Blood Worms that have been freezed dried food from the local pet store. They couldn't eat the normal bloodworms that our others eat so we bought them dried ones and grind them up a little smaller and they have been eating that. We feed them a decent sized pinch two times a day.

Nitrites & nitrates?

Please explain this -a tank is cycled or t isn't. How did you prepare it.

Melafix is tea tree oil - some people swear by it I can't see how it can help & as I'm violently allergic to it I've never tried it.

That is about the worst diet you could have used - ordinary flake would have been better & discus granules much better.
