i now have 12 baby african cichlids in my 55 gallon tank. these guys are very small... i would say a month or two old at the most.... anyway what things should i be doing for them right now? everything is going great as of now but i dont want any road blocks to come up haha... how often should i be doing water changes and how much? how often should i be feeding them and should i be feeding a certain kind of food? also weird question but one of my electrics stays in the bubble wall all day... shooting up and down doing circles... he looks healthy... is he just having a good time?

4 electrics

4 kenyi

4 Metriaclima estherae

Water changes - i would reccommend 25-30% a week

Feeding - you have 1 Herbivore species (Kenyi) and 2 Omnivore (Labs and Estherae). I would suggest a good spirinula based veggie flake, stick or pellet as the staple diet with occasional treats of frozen brine shrimp or spirinula enriched frozen brine shrimp is even better. Avoid things like Krill and bloodworm as they are high in protein and this will cause digestive problems - especially for the Kenyi.

Other than that - they will pretty much take care of themselves.

The Yellow lab playing in the buubles doesn't sound like a problem to me. :good:

all the fish are doing great but i have one question. of course its about the electrics haha... i have 4 electrics they have all been swimming together. 3 of them are a bright yellow and one is a very light yellow and it almost looks like it has different markings. im not sure from being lighter it shows marks that the other ones have. could it be a mix of something? it looks very healthy? i will try to get some pictures up.

Could be a hybrid or may just be a sub-dominant fish - Will need a pic to be sure. :good:

kinda hard to tell but look at the difference

How long are the fish? My labs all had the black markings on their dorsal fins by 1/2-inch. If they have already reached 1/2 or more and don't have the black markings, they may be from a bad strain, or they may be l.caeruleus X m.estherae hybrids that have been flooding the market, at least here in the US. That could explain the color difference.

Here's one of my fry that was born last year for reference. In the pic, it's about 1/2-inch.

all of the other yellows have theblack markings on them. they are also all the exact same size. if it is a hybrid will that make any difference in personality towards the other fish?

i have a current pump (wave maker) that i was thinking about putting in my cichlid tank. would they enjoy the current that it makes or not?

cichlids enjoy swimming in currents...it gives them something to do plus it helps naturally keep the water moving in your aquarium...i have my heater right in front of a powerhead that i have stuck on the side of my tank with the outtake facing towards the middle of the aquarium..that way heat is put throughout my tank..my cichlids love swimming against it...its very interesting and fun to watch...i also attached a filter to it so it provides extra filtration

well the cichlids are really enjoying the extra water current! i was wanting to add a little sponge filter just for a place for some bacteria to colonize on. what kind of sponge could i buy? the lps dont carry anything except for the ones that come with the filters and of course wont offer to sell it or try to get some in. i was thinking some sponge i could just get from a wallmart or something? so bascially what kind and what not to get. second question is for feeding. i would like to feed some of my fish with some kind of vegetable. what will cichlids eat. also what kind of vegetables should i get? are frozen ok then just warm them up in the microwave? thanks for all your help!

If one of the "yellows" is a hybrid (and I suspect it is), you won't really know what the personality is until it reaches sexual maturity. However, from what I've heard most of the lab x estherae crosses are pretty peaceful.

Why do you think you need an extra sponge in the tank? If you have a filter running (and I'm assuming you do) all the bacteria you need will grow in it. You also have a smaller amount of bacteria on every surface of the tank (ie gravel, rocks, etc).

I'm sure they like swimming against the current. I have two filters running on my tank and they do seem to enjoys the resistance, just as long as you have plenty of rocks for them to get out of it when they need to. Juveniles especially will get worn out constantly swimming against the current.

Your cichlids will certainly enjoy vegetables. Peas, zucchini, spinach, other greens (iceburg doens't go over very well IME), and cucumber. I prefer to freeze them first, and then let them thaw, that way they are nice and soft. However, you can take fresh veggies and parboil them, then let them cool. Peas are a little different, you need to boil them, or heat them up in the microwave. Then split the outer shell and squish out the inside, and throw out the outer shell. The fish can't digest the outer part, but will go crazy over the inside. Don't be surprised if the labs just pick at the veggies, mine are never too interested though they will eat some. If you can get spriulina enhanced brine shrimp your labs and estherae will love you for the shrimp and the spirulina will add veggies to their diet. I'd only feed them that once a week though, because the kenyi can't handle too much animal protein.

well i have a bio wheel and if i stick something in it it slows the water down to the point where you cant hear it. so i was thinking of sticking a small sponge in the penguin 100 so you wouldnt be able to hear it at all. i have a aqual unimax pro 250 uv canister filter as my main. i more stuck my penguin on for a little top current coming down rather than my easy moving canister one. total filtration is about 300 gph. what food would you recommend as a staple diet for them? right now i have them on HBH african cichlid attack and some seaweed. kenyi prefer the seaweed but still eat both. others enjoy the cichlid attack.. but im sure there are better foods than these that i wouldnt mind switching to

Ask every mbuna keeper on here about the best staple food, and you'll get a different answer everytime.

As for myself, staple foods: Wardly African Cichlid Attack, Soft Veggie Pellets, New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula, and spirulina pellets. I alternate every feeding.
Frozen food: brine shrimp, daphnia
And I'll occasionally chuck in some zucchini, salad greens, or peas.

The biowheel on your penguin is a biofilter, so the extra sponge isn't needed, the cannister filter will also hold bacteria, I honestly wouldn't worry about adding anything else, as long as your ammonia and nitrite remain zero, you have enough bacteria to support your tank.
