My new babies have just arrived. I stripped the fry from the mothers mouth the other day. I have done this before with about a 50 percent succes rate. Im curious what is the ideal diet for these little guys. I feed the crushed up flake food and crushed up krill. Anyone have any other suggestions?

hello

sorry to deviate a little here, but why would you "strip" the babies from the mothers mouth LOL, sounds stressful (for mum!!!) - so what happens if you just relax and let nature take its course? she eat the babies?

not a complete novive by the way, just havent ever kept a mouthbrooder

Sometimes it can be really stressfull to leave her and yes because she starves herself while brooding she will become really hungry and if she is left with her spat fry for too long then she will eat them.
I actually never strip my females, I leave them in there own tank with enough hiding places for the fry so that minimal get eaten if any.

i had this problem with my yellow lab i did have.i striped her of her 2nd batch and went away for a week or 2 and had my sisters feed my fish.got back and she was dead.u could see where the fry ate her cheks out.i found a few but only saved 1.nasty lil hybrids!

I have some brine shrimp i will go ahead and use that. I strip them so she can eat and to put the fry in there own tank so they dont get eaten.
