hello,

Ive been tinking about breeding fish for the past few weeks but i cant seem to decide on what to breed. I want to breed a fish that is popular and people enjoy alot. So here's the question: "What is your favorite fish and why".

Thanks,

Squidman

My favs probably RAMS, which you can breed quite easily ive heard. Cribs maybe ?
Depends how much time and effort you want to put into it.

Easy and popular to breed would be guppies :) my personal favourites are more towards plecs, colourful tetra's and puffers. Rams are very popular but IMO arnt as interesting as they may first seem.

what fish do u want to breed?

livebearers.
Cichlids egg deposerters
Cichlids mouth brooders
Bubble nesters (betta's)
Characins
Catfish

Once you get this far you should then think of what the fish need and build the tank to the fish.

like livebearers want loads of java moss etc etc for the fry to hide.
Cichlids large open spaces, or caves.
Cichlid mouth brooders want loads of rocks and hideing places for the fry.
Characins want pebble or marbled bottom for the eggs to fall into so are safe from the parents.

Once you have an idea what you want to breed then research if you can provide food for the fry etc etc.

So basically decide and we'll help.

personaly livebearers and mouth brooding cichlids are easy to start off with

Im thinking i will decide to go with rams. Ive seen pictures of them and they seem to look colorful. It also appears to me that rams are kinda popular as well. Does anyone know what should be used as the ram fry's first food?

may need to get soft water (unless your lucky enough to live in a soft area) first foods at day 4-5 should be newly hatched brine shrimp and mirco worm.

They will breed in hard water but better in soft

What should be fed before the first 4-5 days?

after hatching they dont feed they use their yolk sac, and their unable to swim as well, at day 2-3 they start to swim and day 4-5 the need food, so start feeding from day 3-4 and remember to keep an eye one water quality as many foods pollute the water very quickly.

Only if you let the fry scavenge on what the parents wast, but you not raise many fry that way. The best food means you need to work towards the final resualt.

If you want easy to rear fry go for livebearers, kribs, yellow lab cichlids. Course their are others but these are very eary to reay with flake foods.

Well again this depends on what you feed and how you care for the fish.....

If you put loads of food in and do loads of water changes they can all grow quickly.
If you dont want to grow them fast then it can take several months to get any fish to a good size.

This is where you rearly need to think what you want to do with mainterance levels and species.

all righty, thanks for all the help. I think i will look around for rams at my lfs. I will probably feed brine shrimp when at the appropiate age. Do I need to make infusoria for them? and Are rams a moth brooding fish or what?

Hi Squidman,

If you're still trying to make up your mind, I would like to suggest that you pick out a fish you enjoy keeping and try to successfully care for them for awhile. Then, if you still want to breed them, it would a good thing to do.

Trying to breed a fish you are not totally familiar with is something only an experienced breeder should do. I would also suggest you start out raising some kind of live bearer fry because they are bigger and probably stronger than fry that hatch from eggs. Guppies are a popular fish and many people start out with them. :D
