what water do they need to be kept in?
any other info would be great :D :good:

hi,

Your are right when you say they are not fish, although their name is a bit misleading (Mexican walking fish). Axolotls should not be kept with any other fish. If you were to just keep 2 adult axolotls a tank 60 by 30 by 30 should be big enough. The live to be about 12- 15 years old. They thrive in cool temperatures 15- 18, a temperature of 22 would be the highest they could cope with before overheating them. To prevent overheating never put them near direct sunlight. Never house axolotls in soft or distilled water. Remove the chlorine, chloramines and the ammonia. The ph should be between 6.5 - 8.

Axolotls prefer dim lighting. Normal indoor lighting is sufficient without any extra tank lighting. Some people feed their axolotls every day but some will only recommend feeding them 3 times a day. They also need a variety of food not just the same thing. They can be difficult to eat and some will require hand feeding.

Rapidly circulating water is stressful for the axolotls. If you do use a filter the rate of circulation should be as slow as possible.

Hope this helps, lisa

Does anyone know how much they cost in the uk?
Im having trouble finding them :|

You could try asking on this section of the board.
I've just been looking into them as a teacher at school has 2 and since I started learning about the nitrogen cycle etc I'm thinking they have a very small tank and they have no filtration :(
You can keep 2 in a 2ft tank with water as deep as they are long. They are like a junior stage of salamander but reach sexual maturity without ever becoming adult and spend all their life in water.
I've seen them in several reptile places-whereabouts in UK are you?

Im in manchester. I have a new tank (fish box 62l) and Im wondering if I can get one (or two, i don't want it to geet lonley). :)
My tank just reaches 2ft long, but I did want to get some fish in. Is there any type of fish that can live with them? :|

my tank is 60cm in length, 33cm in hight and the depth is 29! So I can have two?! :D
YAY YAY YAY! :D

I'm not sure where abouts in Manchester you are, but I have seen some Axolotls in Timperley Aquatics in.... umm... Timperly... *couch* I'm not sure if they are well cared for as they were kept in the same display tanks as a number of fish.

I always like the look of Axolotls, but I'm not sure I would just want them on their own....
