I was wandering around my LFS yesterday and stopped in the book/magazine area to see if they had any new magazines. Normally their book selection is pretty generic so I was totally surprised to see "Swordtails and Platies" by Herbert R. Axelrod & Lothar Wischnath. I dropped my purchases on top of a box and spent the next half hour leafing through this book. There are over 400 photos of swordies and platies! It has discussions of how many of the strains were developed as well as the usual care information. The photos were just awesome. I started feeling silly standing there in the aisle drooling over ths book so I glanced at the cover to see how much it was going to cost me and nearly had a heart attack - $73.99. I wanted to cry, no way could I afford that yesterday, I don't get paid until next week. On the drive home I decided to ask my B/F to buy it for my birthday present (also next week) but I decided to check on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles first. That made me much happier as both had several used copies ranging in price from $4.76 to $84.99 and I figured I could talk him into getting me a used copy pretty easily. And then I remembered eBay. As luck would have it, there was one listing for it and it was ending in 18 hours with the unbelievable starting price of $2.99 and no bids! I placed my bid and waited anxiousley for it to end fearing some last minute sniper would come in during the closing seconds and take it away from me. I lucked out though and won the auction for the opening bid of $2.99 plus a very reasonable shipping charge of $3.00. Happy birthday to me!!!
If you are into Swordies or Platies keep your eyes open for this book. You will be amazed at some of the varieties that are available yet rarely seen in your LFS. It's a good sized hardback (191 pages) and was published in 1991.
